Jane started her career as a research scientist, but moved into publishing
when she realised that she liked writing about the experiments more than she
liked doing them! More than twenty years of experience in biomedical
publishing have given her plenty of opportunity both to write and to
edit the work of scientists and clinicians.
Jane
worked as Editorial Director of two international medical
communications companies This was followed by many years as a freelance
scientific writer, during which she authored more than 500 publications
on behalf of pharmaceutical companies and medical communications
agencies.
She founded Jane Fraser Associates in 1991, offering courses on writing and editing skills for publishers,
communications agencies, pharmaceutical companies and universities.
Jane
is also a consulting tutor to the University of Oxford's Continuing
Professional Development Centre, where she enjoys helping scientists from
many different countries to write more effectively and get their papers
published.
Jane is the author of four books: 'Presenting in Biomedicine: 500 Tips for Success',
(with Richard Cave; Radcliffe Publishing, 2004), 'How to Publish in Biomedicine: 500 Tips for
Success', (Radcliffe Publishing, 1997, revised ed. 2008), and 'Professional Proposal
Writing', (Ashgate, 1995), and 'Creating Effective Conference Abstracts and Posters in Biomedicine: 200 Tips for Success,'co-authored with fellow JFA trainers Georgina Hutber and Louise Fuller (see below).
Dr Georgina Hutber
Georgina started her career as a research scientist in
biochemistry, but enjoyed writing up her PhD thesis and subsequent papers so
much that she moved into publishing when the opportunity arose. Georgina worked
for several years as Chief Editor in an international medical communications
agency, and since 1991 has been working freelance. She now makes use of nearly
25 years' experience of scientific writing and editing in running skills
training workshops with Jane Fraser Associates. Georgina is the co-author of 'Creating Effective Conference Abstracts and Posters in Biomedicine: 200 Tips for Success,'co-authored with Jane Fraser and Louise Fuller.
Professor Shirley Ellis
Shirley has been an active research scientist in the field of molecular immunology
since 1980, initially at Oxford University and since 1990 at the Institute for
Animal Health, a Research Council-funded institute. She has a long-standing
interest in both postgraduate and supervisor training, a Fellow of the
Higher Education Academy (HEA), and a Visiting Professor at Glasgow University. Shirley is passionate about good writing, and
recently completed an MA in creative and critical writing at the University of
Sussex. Since 2007 she has been working part-time as a freelance trainer,
offering a variety of workshops mostly involving writing skills for
postgraduate students and early-career scientists.
Dr Richard Cave
Dr
Richard Cave has a PhD in organic chemistry and over 20 years of experience in the
pharmaceutical industry, training and scientific communications. Richard has a passion for developing people,
and now works with Jane Fraser Associates to train scientists in presentation skills and other transferable skills. Richard has a particular
interest in NLP (neuro linguistic programming), having qualified as a Master
Practitioner.In addition he is a
faculty member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and Management Centre
Europe and an associate lecturer at the University of Oxford. Richard is co-author with Jane Fraser of 'Presenting in Biomedicine: 500 Tips for Success' (Radcliffe Publishing, 2004).
Dr John Carpenter
Dr John Carpenter has
a PhD in Pharmacology and many years of experience as a lecturer and researcher at the University of Manchester,
He subsequently worked as a professional scientific writer and Editorial Director at three major UK medical communications companies. He is now a freelance scientific writer, communications consultant and trainer. He has
developed and delivered numerous training courses for academic researchers,
health professionals, the pharmaceutical industry, and the Canadian Government. John also regularly gives workshops for the European Medical Writers Association
(EMWA). He is the author of numerous scientific publications and a well-known book (The
A-Z of Pharmacology).
Dr Jenny Odum
Jenny has been actively involved in scientific
research, writing and lecturing for 25 years. Originally a biochemist, she has
a PhD in toxicology. She has worked within the chemical, pharmaceutical and
agrochemical industries and is now an independent consultant. In a long and
varied career, she has written and edited hundreds of papers, reports and
dossiers, and has taughton numerous
postgraduate courses in toxicology. Her enjoyment of both scientific writing
and coaching has led her to join Jane Fraser Associates in providing writing
workshops for postgraduate students and career scientists in biomedicine.
Mrs Mary Moxon
Mary has a BSc in Zoology and an MSc in Applied
Toxicology.She has extensive experience
in the evaluation and reporting of experimental data for submission to
international regulatory agencies, the review of scientific publications and
the preparation of position papers based on expert opinion.Over the years, Mary has been a mentor for
many trainees and has also been appointed to a Scientific
Advisory Panel to ensure the quality of the reports generated by a UK contract
research organisation.She now works
as an independent consultant in toxicology and with Jane Fraser Associates to
provide guidance in scientific writing and presentation skills.
Dr Julie Bowdler
Julie has a degree in biochemistry
and a DPhil in neuropharmacology from Oxford University. She has worked in
medical publishing for the Medicine Group, at Wyeth Research (UK) as a Medical
Writer, and at Origin Pharmaceutical Services as Head of Medical Writing,
training staff in writing and reviewing clinical trial data. In addition, she
has worked for many years as a freelance writer, working with Contract Research
Organisations, pharmaceutical companies, publishers and academic departments.Julie’s particular focus is on
regulatory writing and clinical trials reporting; she also has extensive
experience of writing original research
papers and literature reviews. She now combines freelance writing with training
and advising young scientists on writing skills.
Ms Alison Bramner
Alison has more than 20 years experience as a Study Director
in Regulatory Toxicology and has therefore writtenand advised on many hundreds of study
protocols, reports, scientific publications, technical training documents and
Standard Operating Procedures. She now works as a consultant in regulatory
toxicology, and puts her considerable experience of coaching and mentoring to
good use by running training courses for JFA. Alison has an honours degree in
Applied Biology, a postgraduate diploma in Clinical Trials and is currently studying
for a Masters in Clinical Trials with the University of London International
Programme.
Dr Sandra Allen
Sandra has a
first degree in pharmacology and a PhD in Experimental Neurology. During
her decades of experience as a professional scientist in both industry and
academia, Sandra has managed many scientific studies, and authored numerous
scientific papers, book chapters, industry position papers and guidance
documents. She has worked as a visiting lecturer at the University of Surrey and has
extensive experience of mentoring and
scientific education. Sandra is now an associate trainer with JFA, in
addition to her work as an independent toxicology consultant working to
deliver high quality written submissions to regulatory agencies.
Dr Barry Elliott
Barry has been involved in scientific research and project
management for more than 25 years. With a first degree in chemistry and a PhD
in toxicology, his career in the industrial and pharmaceutical sectors has
provided extensive experience in writing protocols, reports and scientific
papers. He has presented work at many international scientific
meetings, and to
regulatory authorities. He has coached and mentored many young scientists through the process of writing papers and reports, and is a reviewer for several journals. Barry is now an independent consultant in toxicology
and scientific communication.
