Dr Jane Fraser

janeJane started her career as a research scientist, but moved into publishing when she realised that she liked writing about the experiments more than she liked doing them! More than twenty years of experience in biomedical publishing have given her plenty of opportunity both to write and to edit the work of scientists and clinicians.

Jane worked as Editorial Director of two international medical communications companies This was followed by many years as a freelance scientific writer, during which she authored more than 500 publications on behalf of pharmaceutical companies and medical communications agencies.

She founded Jane Fraser Associates in 1991, offering courses on writing and editing skills for publishers, communications agencies, pharmaceutical companies and universities. Jane is also a consulting tutor to the University of Oxford's Continuing Professional Development Centre, where she enjoys helping scientists from many different countries to write more effectively and get their papers published.

Jane is the author of four books: Presenting in Biomedicine: 500 Tips for Success', (with Richard Cave; Radcliffe Publishing, 2004), 'How to Publish in Biomedicine: 500 Tips for Success', (Radcliffe Publishing, 1997, revised ed. 2008), and 'Professional Proposal Writing', (Ashgate, 1995), and 'Creating Effective Conference Abstracts and Posters in Biomedicine: 200 Tips for Success,' co-authored with fellow JFA trainers Georgina Hutber and Louise Fuller (see below).

Dr Georgina Hutber

Georgina started her career as a research scientist in biochemistry, but enjoyed writing up her PhD thesis and subsequent papers so much that she moved into publishing when the opportunity arose. Georgina worked for several years as Chief Editor in an international medical communications agency, and since 1991 has been working freelance. She now makes use of nearly 25 years' experience of scientific writing and editing in running skills training workshops with Jane Fraser Associates. Georgina is the co-author of 'Creating Effective Conference Abstracts and Posters in Biomedicine: 200 Tips for Success,' co-authored with Jane Fraser and Louise Fuller.





Dr Louise Fuller

louise

Louise is a scientific writer and trainer with more than 20 years of experience. Louise's degree, PhD and post-doctoral research were carried out at the University of Cambridge. After leaving university life she joined a medical education agency, ultimately becoming Editorial Manager.  For the last 11 years she has been running her own company specialising in medical writing for the pharmaceutical industry and running training sessions in medical writing, medical editing and publication planning. She has written and edited over 600 medical and marketing publications, including congress abstracts, posters, slide presentations, clinical and scientific papers, conference reports, press packs, press releases, promotional materials and training manuals. Louise is the co-author of 'Creating Effective Conference Abstracts and Posters in Biomedicine: 200 Tips for Success,' co-authored with Jane Fraser and Georgina Hutber.


Dr Lucy Hyatt

Lucy is a medical writer, editor and trainer with 15 years of experience. After a degree in chemistry from Bristol University, she worked in discovery research in the pharmaceutical industry. A PhD in organic chemistry and molecular biology was followed by post-doctoral research in biochemistry at the University of Hong Kong. She joined a medical communications agency in Hong Kong, where she rose to Managing Editor. While in this agency, she conducted training workshops in medical writing for clinicians in China, Hong Kong and Thailand. Returning to Europe in 1999, Lucy spent a year at a global medical communications agency in the Netherlands. For the last decade, she has worked as a freelance writer, editor and consultant, in addition to running training workshops for Jane Fraser Associates.


Dr Karen Wilson-Smith

Karen was previously Editorial Director at Parexel MMS where for nine years she managed a team of medical writers and production editors, as well as playing a leading client-facing role. Karen’s PhD was in equine physiology at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket. From there, she moved to Animal Pharm where she wrote reports on the animal health industry and then to Franklin Scientific Projects (now Medicus) to start her career in medical communications.Karen became a freelance writer three years ago and specialises in publication and strategic planning. She also writes a wide range of articles and other educational materials for diverse audiences, as well as training for Jane Fraser Associates.


Dr Shirley Ellisshirley

Shirley has been an active research scientist in the field of molecular immunology since 1980, initially at Oxford University and since 1990 at the Institute for Animal Health, a Research Council-funded institute. She has a long-standing interest in both postgraduate and supervisor training, and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA). Shirley is passionate about good writing, and recently completed an MA in creative and critical writing at the University of Sussex. Since 2007 she have been working part-time as a freelance trainer, offering a variety of workshops mostly involving writing skills for postgraduate students and early-career scientists.


Dr Diane Storey

Dr Diane Storey has a PhD in biochemistry and more than two decades of of experience in scientific publications and communications. She has worked not only as a medical writer in an international communications agency, but also in sales and marketing in a major pharmaceutical company. For the last 15 years she has run her own own medical communications consultancy, in addition to facilitating workshops for Jane Fraser Associates on scientific writing, editing and presentation skills.
